Here goes…. I’ve been a vegan to the best of my ability* for the past 30 years.
{ * best of my ability; There’s no such thing as a perfect anything. No such thing as 100% anything. I try my best but I do splat bugs on my windshield. Im sure Ive run over or stepped on countless insects. Cutting the grass, Im sure many bugs met their demise under my blade. I don’t always read the ingredients and Im sure there were things Ive eaten that were connected to animals somehow. The obvious, I clearly avoid. Like I won’t go out and buy meat or eat things I know are from animals }
I do this mostly out of ethical reasons. I don’t eat my dog. I wouldn’t eat a cat. I wouldn’t take milk from a snake or armadillo or gorilla so why is cow milk ok?
As the vegans say “the first person to drink milk from a cow must have been into some pretty freaky shit” I mean what would possess someone to say “hey man, let’s go over and drink the milk from that cow” what were they on mushrooms or something? No other animal, naturally, takes milk from another species. Yes, it has happened but only under some weird and mitigating circumstances. It’s not normal.
I grew up on a farm. We had to take over when my grandfather died. My mom and I looked after the animals long as she could by my father, who was a business man, wanted nothing to do with farming, called in the “real farmers” they “took care of the animals” from there. As a child I witness some pretty horrific shit which I won’t get into because even now, nearly 50 years later, it’s still hard.
Even so I still ate meat for the first 30 years of my life! Even after seeing what I saw first hand.
Veganism came to me not out of fear but from a challenge. A challenge to see if I could go 30 days without meat. Since I had already fasted before for 48hrs on NOTHING, I thought how hard could it be to simply stop eating meat for 30 days.
At the beginning, it was hard because I didn’t know shit. I even panicked a bit but for my own strength, I thought, “I have to pass this self imposed test” so I stuck to it.
I forced myself to figure out other ways, other alternatives and I got though the first 30 days somehow.
Then since I knew I could do it, I saw no reason to return to participating in the cruelty, pain, suffering and ultimate untimely deaths of animals, especially now that I knew it was not necessary.
Veganism taught me that we have been lied to all our lives. Fuck. Even Pink Floyd told us, “EF YE DENT EET YER MEAT, HOW KENNY HEV ANY PUDDIN!? HOW KENNY HEV ANY PUDDIN EF YE DENT EET YER MEAT!??”
Parents used to tell us, “eat your meat and potatoes to be big and strong”. In fact I became in better shape and physically and mentally stronger in the 2nd 30 years of my life, after changing to plants only. Ive been holding at roughly 200L for the past 30 years, which is about right for my height and frame. I didn’t gain weight or lose weight but I feel better and mentally I know I’m not participating in the cruelty.
So why would this offend anyone?
Mostly men, I find are offended by this. I guess they feel threatened. They use the analogy of skinny weak vegans. I did mma and weights for years, trained and trained with military. All my “friends” in the gym would be like “you’re gonna lose all your muscle and shrivel up and die” (some friends) Nobody (in the gym) was supportive of it.
You see, it’s a hit against their lifestyle. This is how they were brought up (me too) but men, mostly (and a few women) don’t want to hear it because they know to eat meat means someone has to die for it. Most don’t like this concept. I mean, many don’t seem to care, like Jeffery Dahmer. He didn’t care about if his victims were in pain, felt fear or didn’t want to die and be eaten but he did it anyway.
I think (I’d LIKE to think) that most people are not like Jeffery Dahmer. I’d like to think that most have some sense of right vs wrong. I’d like to think that most people, if they saw cruelty being done to an animal. They would do something to stop it. Whether that meant getting physically involved or at least calling for help.
I think the fact that a man can still be strong and healthy without eating animals seems to offend many.
Some vegans go to great extents to prove this, olympic athletes, football players, hockey players, world record power lifters,
Mr Universe etc but you don’t have to be the best in the world. The way I see it, is if vegan is good enough for the best in the world, it’s good enough for me and probably for the rest of the world. Here are some others if you’re interested.
If eating plants taught me anything, it taught me that most of what we learn from the media, even our parents, is not always right. It taught me, at very least to QUESTION EVERYTHING!
